Video Game Scams

Updated: September 18, 2025

Video games have become one of the most popular pastimes worldwide. Even if you’ve never picked up a controller, chances are you’ve heard of titles like The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, FIFA, or Call of Duty. Unfortunately, as the gaming industry continues to grow, so does the interest of cybercriminals. With 95% of video games being purchased online, scammers are targeting gamers with schemes designed to steal personal and financial information.

Free Downloads May Contain Malware

Cybercriminals often lure victims by offering free downloads of popular video games. While the file may look legitimate, it can contain hidden malicious software. In many cases, the initial download installs malware that secretly allows additional harmful programs to be placed on your device. Once installed, these programs can track your online activity, capture sensitive data like bank account details or login credentials, and put your personal information at serious risk.

Cybercriminals Sell Your Digital Items

Downloads aren’t the only way cybercriminals try to target gamers. Many video games allow players to purchase “in-game currency” with real money, which can then be exchanged for valuable items, upgrades, or exclusive features. These digital assets often carry significant real-world value, making them a prime target for scammers.

Cybercriminals frequently use tactics like phishing emails or fake login pages to trick players into giving up their account details. Once they gain access, they can transfer your hard-earned items to their own accounts and resell them to other players for profit; leaving you empty handed.

What Can You Do to Stay Safe?

Don’t fall for video game scams! Follow the tips below to stay safe:

  • Never download files from an unverified source. A file that looks legitimate and runs properly can still contain malware.
  • Always think before you click. Cyberattacks are designed to catch you off guard and trigger you to click impulsively so cybercriminals can obtain your sensitive information.

Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your accounts when available. MFA adds a layer of security by requiring that you provide additional verification to log in to your account.
