  1. The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel is worth $3.7 million due to the fact that it was created by a rogue U.S. Mint employee who only made five cent coins. Currently, two of these coins reside in a museum, while three others are in private collections.
  2. Martha Washington is the only women to have ever appeared on U.S. currency. She was the face of the $1 Silver Certificate of 1886 and 1891. She was the back of the $1 Silver Certificate in 1896.
  3. The world’s oldest form of money is most likely pieces of obsidian, which were used in Turkey all the way back in 12,000 BC. Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass that is formed as an igneous rock.
  4. Do you know where piggy banks came from? The word pygg in Old English refers to a type of orange clay that was used to make dishes and jars that held money. As the English language changed, pygg and the word pig started to sound similar, which is where the idea of piggy banks that look like pigs came from.
  5. According to history, China was using paper money more than 1,000 years ago. In fact, Marco Polo wrote about it during some of his travels.
