Coin Collecting: A Great Hobby For Kids

The hobby of coin collecting actually has its own name, numismatics. It’s easy and fun to start a coin collection of your own. All you have to do is begin with coins you already have. Make sure to check your pockets, drawers, wallet, and home furniture. You would be surprised at how many different types of coins are hiding around your house! After you have done this, ask friends and family members for any old or unusual coins they could donate to your collection.

There are many different types of coins you could collect. Many people like to collect foreign currency, as it is unique from coins that we are accustomed to in the U.S. The United States also has several special coin releases, such as the 50 states quarters. Many rare coins that can still be found in circulation include the Bicentennial Quarter and the Wheat Penny. You could also start collecting coins from your birth year. Consider visiting flea markets or antique stores with your parents for additional coins to add to your collection.

If coin collecting sounds like a hobby you would like to get into, the U.S. Mint website has tips for getting you started. Look for coins that interest you by becoming a numismatist today!
